and raises the stakes for the fiscal cliff end game because the white house had wanted a debt ceiling deal as part of the overall deal here on the fiscal cliff. republicans have been resisting that by announcing the debt ceiling limit will be held on monday, ratchets up the pressure to include the debt ceiling piece in the final package, whatever that may be, but still not clear, carl, there is going to be a final package of any kind. one quick note, we saw the realism. pact in the real world of the debt situation. treasury announcing yesterday it has suspended the sale of state and local government securities, government series securities. so already, they are doing some maneuvering here financially to try to avoid that debtly limit. the treasury secretary says he doesn't know how much wiggle room they are going to have, given that all the fiscal cliff uncertainty is out there. >> eamon, on this idea that the house members get called back with 48 hours' notice. traders are looking for that headline if it happens almost that bleed out there or procedural moment where that is announced, so

. anybody in any authorities says anything about the likelihood or otherwise of a fiscal cliff deal you will see the market react. it happened earlier this morning. there was a report that maybe these talks between mitch mcconnell and vice-president biden were making some progress. on that, up went the futures market to show a gain of 80 points for the dow. we're back to showing a gain of 50 or 70 points. watch for head lines, for leaks, for any sound bites that might appear on any news program anywhere and you will have some kind of market reaction. as we countdown to the end of this fiscal cliff, i'm going to call it a debacle because that's exactly what it is. even if we get a very, very narrow deal, whoop-de-doo, we have a debt ceiling problem and amt taxes, government spending, all of those problems outstanding, nothing done. the dow jones industrial average is not done up for the opening bell, it's down, we're 42 points, 48 points going down as of right now. 50 points lower. what did you give, what did you get for christmas this year? chances are, a computer tablet maybe? accordin

in another attempt to agree on a fiscal cliff deal. amon j eamon jav everyoers has the sto. >> i'm keeping an eye on my iphone here, i just got an e-mail from a source that says there might be even further news this evening, so, waiting for a status update on that. but we did get some news today and that news, as you say, was that the house of representatives is going to be called back early. they are coming back on sunday at 6:30 p.m. what they're going to do when they get here, we don't have any idea. but we had a fascinating series of dueling press conferences, dueling floor speeches, i should say, by senate republican and democratic leaders. the republican leader, mitch mcconnell, really put the blame on democrats, but he did seem to indicate that there may be further negotiations that are ongoing here, possibly even as we speak. take a listen to mitch mcconnell earlier this afternoon. >> the truth is, we're coming up against a hard deadline here and as i said, this is a conversation we should have had months ago. and republicans aren't about to write a blank check for anything senate

that the sh we're dealing with right now in the fiscal cliff is a prime example of it. what i'm arguing for are maintaining tax cuts for 98% of americans. i don't think anybody would consider that some liberal, left wing agenda. it used to be considered a mainstream agenda. and it's something we can accomplish today if we simply allow for a vote in the senate and in the house to get it done. the fact that it's not happening is ancation of, you know, how far certain factions inside the republican party have gone where they can't even accept what used to be centrist mainstream positions on these issues. i'm an optimist. we try every other option before we finally do the right thing. after everything else is exhausted, we eventually do the right thing. and i think that's true for congress, as well. and i think it's important for americans to remember politics have always been messy. people have been asking me a lot about the film "lincoln" and -- >> is this your lincoln moment? >> well, no. look, i never compare myself to lincoln and, b, the magnitude of the issues are quite different from

say major progress make progre toward a fiscal cliff deal. guest: mitch mcconnell when they spoke yesterday, he called in joe biden and said he needed a partner to work with. joe biden, who was in delaware and had not been involved in negotiations, came in at the end to try to work out something. it does seem like overnight they were talking and making the kind of progress that they had been hoping for. we are really at the clock ticking before the end of the year host: what about the house? if lawmakers and the white house are not able to read this last ditch effort, the country will likely go over the fiscal cliff, as you pointed out. guest: the house speaker had said very clearly that they do not anticipate passing anything before the senate passes something, but they want to see what the senate does. they will then take that bill and either amend it or approve it. if they amend, they will send the amended version back to the senate. over the weekend bypassed some rule changes that will allow them to move more quickly and do those sorts of things rather than the waiting period

are now on the senate when it returns on thursday to try to get a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. this past friday before the president left for his family vacation in hawaii, he proposed a limited measure to avoid all of the cliff when speaker boehner scuttled his plan b, the president wants to extend the bush tax cuts now for the middle class and try to avoid some of these deep spending cuts on january 1st. a white house spokesperson says today that staff discussions continue between the administration and the hill. in july you may recall the senate democrats passed an extension of the middle class tax cuts if r a year at a -- for a year at a cost of 157 billion. that bill also patched the alternative minimum tax for 2012 for 92 billion, but it went nowhere after that. senate republican leader mcconnell is critical to hammering out a deal because he can filibuster any legislation, but his spokesperson says this morning quote, nothing new to report. we don't know yet what senator reid plans to bring to the senate for a vote. >> when i listen to the president, i think the preside

with no deal to avoid the fiscal cliff we'll look why one of them says a plan could be possible if the president himself didn't want to take us over the edge. >> we are told injuries are serious. they are being treated in local hospitals. as you mentioned a police officer from nearby greece, new york was apparently driving by. he was injured when his vehicle or the area near him was hit by shrapnel. now, as for the crime scene itself, the authorities say that they believe that the shooter is dead. no word as to his identity. also not clear, kelly, is what type of weapon he had with him. the authorities said that it was not clear if it was an assault rifle, the type of weapon we have heard so much about during the past few days. we expect that there will be more information later today. they say there will be a news conference at 2:00 this afternoon. another thing to keep in mind is that because of the attack on the firemen, they were unable to put out the house fire, and what began as a house fire and vehicle fire then spread to at least three other buildings. we are toll that t

. a bleak tone from some in congress sunday on reaching a deal with the white house to avoid the fiscal cliff. president obama and congress are on christmas vacation. it will be thursday before talks resume to try and prevent automatic tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect january first. andrew spencer has the latest. analysts say many shoppers haven't been in the holiday spirit when it comes to spending money. the four-day black friday weekend that started on thanksgiving was strong. sales rose 2-point-7 percent. but analysts says sales fell 4-point-3 percent for the week ending december 15th. and last week they forecasted holiday spending to decrease another 2-point- 5 percent. previous expectations were for a 3-point-3 percent increase in spending. the saint anthony foundation needs help to reach its goal of collecting 5-hundred hams during the 25th annual curbside donation drive. according to the foundation, they collected a hundred hams. that's just 20-percent of their goal. the foundation hoped to get another 400 hams sunday and today. if you would like to donate a ham yo
